Our ambitions – and how we will know if our Growth Plan is working.

Each worker will generate

£8,600 more value

Better living standards across all parts of the region will be fuelled by more productive businesses within a more resilient economy. On average, each worker will generate £8,600 more value by 2035 if the West Midlands achieves the levels of accelerated growth seen in regions like our own.

Economically inactive will reduce by

5% by 2035

There will be 93,000 more people in work. The West Midlands’ working age population that is economically inactive will reduce by 5% by 2035, bringing our employment rate close to the national average and making our contribution to the government’s goal to achieve 80% employment across the country.

A growth rate of

2% per year

A growth rate of 2% per year to 2035 comes from both more hours worked (+0.9%) and higher productivity (+1.1%). This is higher than the OBR’s medium-term UK forecast (+1.7%-1.8%) and is a step-change from trend levels over the last 20 years. This would deliver an economy that is £17.4 billion larger than it is today.

Contributing to our region’s target of

12,200
homes per year

Places across the region will have the infrastructures they need to support our future economy. We will deliver towards our region’s target of 12,200 homes per year; an increase in public transport usage and better connectivity between our cities and towns; higher footfall on priority high streets; reduced delays in energy connections; more resilient infrastructure; and gigabit accessibility at 99% of all premises by 2030.

The West Midlands will be on track to achieve its ambition to be

carbon neutral by 2041.

1Independent analysis by Public First commissioned by the University of Warwick and University of Birmingham find that in addition to a 1.3% real-terms West Midlands growth trajectory (the grey line), there are credible paths to improve (yellow line) or accelerate (green line) up to £6.5bn per year of additional growth by 2025 based on the region’s cluster strengths.
